ROTEIRO

This project’s aim was to gather a series of experiences and personal documentaries, which represented not only Design in general, but also all the graphical production process. To accomplish such task we did interviews to some design related professionals, such as Francisco Providência, R2, among others. These professionals were selected taking into account some details as the era which inspires them and because they develop their work in Porto.
Six interviews were made as well as visits to two graphical production facilities, which served as a template to the creation of a graphical package, comprised of a book, where we can find vital information about the interviews and also an audio CD. As the main objective was the possible introduction of the product in the market we organized it in six different individual packages and another general package for all the different.

"ELEMENTARE TYPOGRAPHIE- Tschichold"

When exploring the expressiveness of typography and image, I developed a document which primes for the delicacy and sensuality. The image (a crucial composition element) would support and determine the whole composition, and the text would act as a secondary element, excluding, this way, the need to have a match between both.
The image was made out of recortes, and there was a formal and chromatic coherence in the whole document, sometimes, color was used along the document to add dynamism to the composition.
Thus, a foldable document was developed which acts as the brain of an hardcover book, made of the same material used in the inner part of the document

CREATING EMOTIONS

Trying to match the above project, in which the stain had a primordial role as a composition element, capable of telling a story, we developed other project including a new element: typography
This typography should act as the body of the whole composition. This was accomplished by matching diverse types of the font Century Gothic, several shapes and sizes which aimed to build a coherent and dynamic composition. This composition was allied with the interior treatment of each group of 2 pages, chromatically quer a macha de texto nele disposto. Themes as the dynamism, balance, the “stain”, were explored similarly to the precedent project, making only slight changes on the way we built it.

"IJUP" POSTER

This project starts with the need to develop a poster to the “Segundo Encontro de Jovens Investigadores e Criadores da Universidade do Porto, IJUP (Investigação Jovem na Universidade do Porto). These title was chosen to identify the government incentive to the Porto University students to participate in research activities. The stimulus and attractiveness were taken into account when building the poster, having always in mind that this poster should publicity the event. The project started by having a first experience, which consisted of building a poster that responded to the contest requirements and also it should meet Holger Matthies scope of work and characteristics.
We opted to explore one of the most important characteristics of the author, the foto-montagem. We aimed to create an ambiguous and enigmatic image which could generate a feeling of doubt in the spectator, thus, matching the surreal character of Matthies work.
We did a series of photos to feet and, then, we inserted different mouths photos in each finger in order to give the pluridimensional impression of the event. A scientific event that gathers students from all the different areas of Porto Univeristy scope of teaching, an event for these students to present their currently ongoing research projects. Each character would represent a different area of science.
Also, the image manipulation to match the text was also taken into account. Matthies work defines itself for the capacity of being able to make a perfect match between text and image achieving a coherent and balanced composition. The image is supported by the text many times. This way, the text, which was limited to the information about the event (title, date, context submission, event organization) matched the image harmoniously. We searched for a chromatic unit, using only three colors, red, white and black in the background.
Thus, we achieved a composition and structural simplicity where a vertical central line predominates, which supports all the poster´s structure, as well as an imaginary horizontal line created by separating the image from the text and which acts as a support to the. The elected typographies where Futura and Geosans, in order to maintain the initial simplicity and t give more importance to this work ambiguity.

CREATING EMOTIONS

To creat emotions with an image is, sometimes, a hard task. More than telling a story, the really important matter is to create emotions, capture the attention and feed curisosities in each new page.
This project aim was to realize a maquetização of an A5 book (approximately), stapled in the middle, with cover and inside. The content should be composed of stains which served as a basis to the narrative evolution. These stains were achieved by pouring a portion of sugar and then, with different movements several shapes were registered photographically. The origin of the stain was not important at all, only I wanted that the final result was pleasant and with impact. All the images were created with the different agitation movements of the sugar using a paper as background. After having taken the photos all these photos were treated and the color was inverted. The background paper, which was black, appears white and the sugar appears as a black stain.
In terms of the narrative creation, the main goal was not a construction of a story with begginig, middle and an end, at all, instead, I wanted to recreate a sequence that, above all, could have the potential to. Not being able to predict what’s coming on the next page is one of the objectivers. Thus, I worked with patterns of wihte/black, full/empty, heavy/light in order to prevent chromatic and composition monotony. In the end I was able to create a composition which won not only because of the ambiguity of the competitive stain (once the initial raw matter is not perceived) but also because of the strength to surprise.

I DIDN’T WANT TO DO THIS, BUT I WAS FORCED

"Jornal de parede" developed in “Introdução ao Design” classes, starting from a research project where some areas of Editorial Design were explored, namely, the journal itself as a graphical entity. This project was presented on a group show, where all the students had the possibility to show the works developed according to the explored theoretical basis.

EXPERIMENTAL ALPHABET

The aim was a creation of an alphabet, using same family objects as a starting point. The criteria was to find and not to build, which, therefore, didn’t allow the deconstruction or changing of the object, instead, we should only use different views of the object.

EXPERIMENTAL ALPHABET

Experimenting was the main theme of this project. Different materials, contexts, perspectives and grouping, were the lines that conducted all the work process.
The aim is to create an alphabet that could link the different characters, in most of the cases the material worked as the linking element. Several experiences with different materials, from cookies with different shapes and sizes, chocolates, plants and others.
